celebrating our history
Every year Windrush Day (22 June) and Black History Month (October) is celebrated across the UK. Both events bring together people from many different backgrounds to recognise the rich history; achievements and contributions of Black British/African heritage people in the UK, and also in shaping local communities.
The UK government considers both Windrush Day and Black History Month as culturally significant, inspirational and celebratory events that help to reinforce social cohesion and also ensure:
- that authentic knowledge and understanding of Black History and African heritage culture is actively (and prominently) promoted; and
- wider public recognition of the lasting influence and valued contributions made by African heritage/Black British people to the UK’s culture and wider economy.
With your help, we can ensure the annual celebrations for Windrush Day & Black History Month continue to be a great success for the city of Sheffield.
